Although my father was already detached from the Pillsbury by the time many of these events occurred,(Thomas E. Richardson, May 1955 – Jul 1956 as a Torpedoman’s Mate), I have enjoyed reading your stories.
MY favorite memories of those days as a Pillsbury Kid were our little yellow & blue t-shirts with a picture of the Pill on the front! That and plus the fact that my little sister was born Dec 30 1955 while my dad was out on picket duty! He had receive permission to stay home the 2 wks that she was due and of course the baby didn’t come, so he had to go out at the end of December. We had just moved into base housing at the then new Commodore Perry Village and didn’t’ even have phone service yet, so my mother (who didn’t drive and had 2 small children at home) worked out a system with a neighbor up the hill with the front porch light….ON meant she needed help. Although these were duplexes, we didn’t have a neighbor on the other side of us. Oh, did I mention that there was a severe snowstorm that week to complicate matters? Everything turned out fine as Navy wives stick together!
Have a great day!

Bengy, I think you were the dispatch messenger who was the only other person aboard who was as seasick as I was!! If I have the right guy you used to bring me messages to decode when I was sick as a dog in my bunk. We had some great times on that European cruise but that seasickness got me down and I never got over it in 32 years in the Navy!

The short guy you mentioned sounds like Abel, BMSN, ran the paint
locker, up in the bow. Arrogant little guy, always yelling. Might have
had something to do with living in those fumes all day long. He was
famous for the shiniest shoes at inspection. He would paint them that
morning.
So XO had a jaunt in London, or somewhere. Us guys weren't privy to that
stuff then, but reminded me of Kaoshung, many years later, when the crew
were at stations for getting underway, but no XO. He eventually showed
up in a rickshaw. And a new nickname!

I was on the Pillsbury 56-58. I was an EM3 when I left in 58. I returned to my home state of California and that's where I live now. I retired from college teaching in 1997. Now I live with my wife on 5 acres in a rural area near Sacramento.
On Mike Lambert" photo page I am in the "Versailles" photo; bottom row, third from the left. Gerry Moore is to my right.
I often ran the movie projector, and selected many of the "great" movies you all watched in the mess hall.

Michael,
I really enjoyed your USS Pillsbury website and appreciate all your
hard work getting it together. I found it purely by accident, not ever
dreaming that there was such a thing. The pill was my best shipboard
duty in my Navy career and I won't ever forget it. We had some great
times in all those foreign ports.
On the Crew Roster I'm listed as a Plankowner. This is not correct, this
honor probably goes to Bart Archer whom I relieved in March '57. I
assume he was the first SO. I detached in April '58. It seemed to me I
was aboard longer than that but I just a few minutes looked it up in my
old orders copies complete with endorsements. We sure did a lot of
things in that one year!
Thanks again,
Gus Causbie
